About our club... The Tyler Model United Nations Club is a student run organization at the University of Texas at Tyler, comprised of students interested in the inner workings of the United Nations, including diplomacy, writing resolutions, and studying world affairs. We enthusiastically encourage students of all majors who share our desire to learn about foreign affairs and possibly help to solve the world's problems to join our club. What is Model UN? The Model United Nations is a simulation of the United Nations. Students assume the roles of ambassadors to the United Nations and debate the current issues on the U.N.'s agenda. Through diplomacy and negotiation, Model U.N. students try to find solutions to complex global concerns such as: the environment, economic development, AIDS, conflict resolution, disarmament, and human rights. What do we do? There are two basic components of the Model U.N. experience. First, students must take the Model UN class taught by Dr. Stadelmann. This class is an intensive preparation process in which the students learn about the U.N. system: its history, its policies and procedures. The students also research the group’s assigned country, organize positions, prepare policy papers, draft resolutions and practice the rules of procedure and public speaking techniques. Second, in the spring, the students become the "ambassadors" during the Model U.N. conference in New York City. The conference allows students to implement all that they have learned by applying it and working with other students to write resolutions on a given topic. Students caucus with other countries representatives to negotiate resolution wording and the specifics of a topic. What can I get out of Model UN? The Model United Nations teaches a student the importance of tolerance, diplomacy and, more importantly the patience of resolving differences through dialogue and compromise. Model UN teaches communication skills and builds the students’ confidence that they can work with others to solve problems. A good understanding of world affairs is also important to all walks of life. The Model UN experience also encourages students to think critically about not only our own countries position on international issues, but different perspectives as well. How can I learn more? Just send us an e-mail to contact@tylercollegiatenmun.org, find someone on our members list and ask them, or stop by Dr. Stadelmann’s office,BUS 224. |
